Janken

Today was possibly one of the best days I have ever had in my life.

A bold statement to make, but I think it’s probably true. Considering I didn’t sleep last night, I think I did pretty well for myself. Wandering in a slightly drunken haze through the Peace Park in Hiroshima today I had an idea all of a sudden.

Armed with my 50mm prime f/1.8 lens I decided I would play a game with people.

I approached pretty much everyone who looked like they were willing to have a bit of fun. I went up to them and immediately explained my game.

Rules:

I play one game of janken (paper, scissors, stone) with them. If I win, I take a portrait shot of them; if I lose, I don’t take a photo.

Simple game and easy to understand. I explained in Japanese to Japanese people, and in English to everyone else. There was only one Romanian guy with his family who struggled with the rules of janken. He said it was too complicated. I gave up.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I met people from all over the world and got into some great conversations. It’s amazing how friendly and genuine people are if you just go up, take a chance and talk to them. Here are all of the shots I took of people.

Project (1 of 27)

These two pretty girls were from Finland. There eyes caught my attention when I was walking along. I didn’t janken with them.

Project (2 of 27)

I think this guy was from India…

Project (3 of 27)This guy was an engineer from the States

Project (4 of 27)

He took this photo of me. I was using the camera at f/1.8, so the depth-of-field was tiny. He didn’t get the focussing right for this shot, but I like it anyway. It has a dreamy quality to it…

Project (5 of 27)This guy was also from the States. He was just chilling on a bench thinking. Nice guy…

Project (6 of 27)Project (7 of 27)This girl is from Korea and I actually know her from JET. I did a translation and interpretation course with her in December. As an indication of how drunk I still was, I blabbered away in Japanese to her for about 5 minutes before I realised that I knew her. She was the only person I took 2 photos of. Everyone else was a one-shot-wonder.

Project (8 of 27)

I forget where these two were from, Aichi or Nagano maybe? I’m pretty sure they were from out of town though.

Project (9 of 27)

I lost a game to one woman, who then insisted on taking a photo of me with my camera because she won…

Project (10 of 27)This kid was half Japanese and half Romanian. Cool kid.

Project (11 of 27)

I also forget where these two were from… Sorry!

Project (12 of 27)Project (13 of 27)Project (14 of 27)

These two were on holiday from Australia.

Project (15 of 27)

From Italy…

Project (16 of 27)Project (17 of 27)Project (18 of 27)Project (19 of 27)Project (20 of 27)

This guy was selling sumi-e. I was supposed to buy that one for 3,000 yen, but I forgot to go back and get it. My one regret of the day. I hope he wasn’t angry that I didn’t go back…Project (21 of 27)

This family were from Hokkaido. The little girl was having mixed-feelings about being photographed and the parents started to kind of pressure her into cooperating. So I snapped this as fast as I could. I didn’t want to make her feel crappy. Project (22 of 27)

This is the A-bomb dome. I’ve included it in the series as a reminder that most of the people I took photos of today had come here to remember the terrible event that happened in Hiroshima all those years ago. This is one of the buildings that was left standing after the bomb. It is left here as a reminder to us all about the terrible event.

Stark contrast to the beaming faces I photographed that day.

Project (24 of 27)

This is my favourite photo of the day I think. These two were a lovely couple from New York originally, but now living in New Zealand. Really nice people. The irony is that I lost the game, but talked to them for so long that I couldn’t NOT take a photo of them…

Project (23 of 27)When I lost originally, the guy took this photo of me. Nice shot!

Project (25 of 27)Project (26 of 27)Project (27 of 27)

These two girls were my last shot. They were from Okayama. We connected on Twitter right there. Another shot that I took, even though I lost to them!

A big thank you to all I met that day. It really was a lovely day meeting and talking to friendly people. It’s a shame I didn’t get to take photos of a lot of the people I met – but I suppose that was the nature of the game.

Brilliant day…

… made even better when I came home to find David Mitchell’s new book waiting for me in my postbox…

Nick, what an interesting idea. Were you still slightly drunk when you thought of this? I can see myself being a little too shy to actual play this game, but it is a genius way to meet new people quickly. Great photos too…. If you come to Osaka again before you ship out let me know. Would be great to say hi again. Alex

Hi Nick, I’m guy of 7th photo of this page… We were from Aichi & Shizuoka!! Your janken game gave us a nice memory to our trip. I wonder why I made such a stern look… while my girl is smiling like an angel… I guess I couldn’t bear heat in July, ha ha ha… I supposed you are continuing this game for a long time, then I’m surprised knowing that you started this just on that day!! I think your game is very interesting. I hope you continue this and add a spice to the trip of many people… Take care!! from Kosuke & Mariko

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments!

Kosuke! I didn’t know you spoke such good English! I’ve got your email address, so I’ll send a high resolution version of the photo to that address. I’m out on a trip today, so I’ll do it when I get home.

Glad you had a good trip!

Nick, thank you very much for your comment by return.
As you may know well through English teacher experience, the Japanese government gives a good education for writing/reading English to their people but nothing more…
I mean, we WRITE WELL but NEVER SPEAK, either I.
(In addition, I have a special tool… google translation!! ha ha ha)
Conversely I was very surprised at your Japanese conversation skill which are much higher than my English!!
I guess it’s much more difficult for English people to speak Japanese which has completely different grammar & letter than for us to speak English. Congrats!!
Anyway we thank you for kind reply, we are awaiting a high res photo.
    Take care.

I’m the engineer from the US (photo #3) and also responsible for the out of focus “dreamy” photo #4. The whole concept “janken art photo contest” was weird and certainly caught me off guard. Primarily came on this site just to confirm it was real, and I have to say I’m really impressed. Excellent photos of interesting people from all over. Thanks for one more memory of Japan that will not be lost in the pace of life. If you’d like to email, I would be happy to recieve some photos of the peace park and the A-bomb dome that you snapped that day. Your phototaking ability and quality is impressive and will certainly dwarf the photos I took of the day. No need to send pics of faces, I can enjoy them here on the site.
    Thanks.

Somehow I came across your photos on Flickr, which led me to this page.

I just want to say how great of an idea that was. The pictures look nice too. Good work.
